Are you seeing more and more raccoons in your neighborhood and wondering what do raccoons eat?
Well, raccoons are omnivores like humans, this means they eat a very varied diet of plant and meat products.
They are very quick to learn and understand different ways of extracting foods from certain environments.
These can be things like;
- Climbing trees or fences to find rewards
- Lifting lids on garbage cans
- Finding their way into chicken coops
- Understanding human set traps
As you may well have seen, it’s not unusual to see raccoons opening gates and latches, lifting lids on bins, as well as tipping over very heavy boxes or storage boxes.
They are also known to enter feral cat shelters unless they’re raccoon proof
So, what is a Raccoons favorite food?
Raccoons will just about eat anything and their favorite foods include;
- Cat & Dog Food (Meat)
- Cat & Dog Biscuits
- Fruit
- Bread
- Peanuts
- Human leftovers
- Chickens
- Berries
- Grains
- Vegetables
- Eggs
- Rats
- Squirrels
- Small livestock
- Birds
- Fish
- Snakes
- Crawfish,
- Worms
- Frogs
Just about anything to be honest…
Reading the list above though and you will quickly see that a few of the items that raccoons like to eat are actually beneficial to us such as eating other pests such as; Rats, Snakes, Squirrels and some Birds.
So they’re not all bad…
However, raccoons eating those creatures is great as long as they are also not visiting your yard.
If you don’t want to be bothered then keep all of the above well away from your yard as well as freshwater stores and the chance you’ll have visiting raccoons will be massively reduced.
